Rare Enemy in Shadow Hearts: Covenant

NOTE: Can be photographed by Anastasia to obtain the "Falling Leaves" move.

Bestiary Entry[]

Creature famous in Japan for mocking travelers and then leaving a red feather when it flees. If placed in one's purse, this feather is said to increase wealth.

Strategy[]

They will always surround you, and always run away first thing, making snapping and beating them hard unless you know the trick.

Equip the Warning Device so you can attack first and have Anastasia snap its photo for the Falling Leaves album.

Next, either try to Seal it so it can't use Falling Leaves or just wail on it with combos and powerful attacks to actually beat it and get it in your library.

Etymology[]

Yamabushitengu

Statue of a Tengu with it's fan, and big nose.

The Tengu (天狗, "heavenly dog") is one of the most famous Japanese mythical creatures.

Often they are depicted as either human (with an extraordinarly large nose) with wings or talons or with a bird's head and a human's body.

Originally seen as war-like demons, they evolved in folklore to become, still dangerous, but protective spirits of the mountains and forests.

While possessing great powers, they are not always malevolent and would help people. For example, in folktales, the famous samurai, Minamoto Yoshitsune was said to have been trained by tengu in the art of swordsmanship.

Nevertheless, they enjoy tricking people, and will curse or hex people they feel deserve it.
