Bestiary Entry[]
Forest dwelling bug monster. Although it feeds primarily on tree sap and flower nectar, it occasionally feeds on human flesh and blood as well.
Etymology[]
Penangglan is the name of a vampire-like, blood-sucking demon, or witch from Malaysian folklore.
It has the unusal power to detach its head from its body, which can then fly around, trailing its organs behind it. However, it can only do this during the night, and must soak its entrails in vinegar to shrink them so it may fit back in its body. In day, the Penangglan is like any other ordinary woman.
Thirsting for blood, it seeks out pregnant women, either trying to feed on their blood, or on the body of their unborn child.
One protection against the Penangglan is by placing the thorny Mengkuang fruit around the house - as they will snare the organs as the creature tries to fly by.
Another way to dispatch her, is to find her headless body, and stuff the neck full of sharp objects, so that when the Penangglan returns, it's organs will be shredded as it tries to reattach itself.
