A fundemental force in the Shadow hearts series which allows users to manipulate the world, and is significant both as part of the gameplay elements, and the plot.
During gameplay, it serves as a counterpart to physical attacks, offering a variety of offensive, defensive and supplemental magics. Most spells are alligned to a particular element, but there are some which are of non-elemental persuasion.
As an aspect of the plot, the majority of the plot-important characters use their powerful abilities to influence their world - for better or for worse.
Magic in the Shadow Hearts series can essentially be broken down into three main groups;
- Offensive Magic - Magic that deals damage to enemies.
- Defensive Magic - Magic that protects against damage from enemies.
- Supplemental Magic - Magic that buffs allies, and debuffs enemies.

Spells are learnt from bosses in a preset order, but are levelled up by repeated use. Enemies have some overlap, with status and attack spells, but frequently have unique magic that the player may never use.
Magic in Shadow Hearts is dictated by the characters' special abilities. They all have unique movesets, and spells are learnt simply by the character levelling up.
Only Yuri Hyuga gets any sort of magic customisation, through his choice of Fusion monster. The targeting system is simplistic; magic targets a single enemy, a group of enemies, a single ally, or all allies.
Shadow Hearts: CovenantEdit

Individual crests come with packets of preset spells - the effectiveness of which can be increased by completing sections of the Key of Solomon, to boost attack power, and lower MP cost.
It's a highly flexible system, further bolstered by character movesets, and the ability to perform Combo Magic, if the party successfully pull off a combo. Spells now also have different areas of effect, and may be used strategically depending on enemy placement.
Shadow Hearts: From the New WorldEdit

Similarly to the system in Covenant, magic is utilised by the Stellar Magic system, although it has a few differences.
Characters may only equip a single chart at a given time, and individual Stellar charts have specific spell nodes, into which certain levelled, typed and elemental spells may be placed. However, for a price, the node may be customised to accept any spell placed.
As with Covenant, the party is able to use Combo Magic, if a combo is pulled off successfully.
