Bestiary Entry[]
A demon from the other world, known as death's representative. Looks harmless as it floats through the air, but a long look will stop the bravest hearts forever.
Etymology[]
Ghatanothoa is an entity from H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
It first appreared in his short story in "Out of the Aeons", where it is described as a huge amorphous monstrostity which is so hideous that anyone who gazes upon it will be petrified into a living mummy - in the manner of the Greek Medusa.
The victim is permanently immobilized, the body taking on the consistency of leather and the internal organs and the brain perserved indefinitely, yet they remaining fully conscious and aware of their surroundings.
Forunately, in the events of the story, the entity is trapped beneath a mountain on the lost continent of Mu.
In the expanded mythos, author Lin Carter links Ghatanothoa directly to Cthulhu - Ghatanothoa being its first born offspring.
