In the main storyline of Shadow Hearts: From the New World, the player meets a NPC named Nvwoti in the Grand Canyon, who requests for Natan to go out and capture Unidentified Mysterious Animals (UMAs) for him.

UMAs can be caught by luring them out using bait and then defeating them in battle, but knowing what bait to use and where requires understanding of the clues given by Nvwoti, as well as some intuition.

UMA hunts become unlocked as the player progresses throughout the game, often becoming available in wild areas or ruins. Once a dungeon where an UMA can be found has been explored at least once, returning to the Grand Canyon and speaking with Nvwoti will provide information on the next target.

The first time Nvwoti is spoken to, he hands the player the Gada Pot, a magical pot which is needed to trap the UMAs. He also gives seven different baits;

The appropriate bait needs to be placed within the home or hunting grounds of the UMA in order to lure it out. The locations where bait can be laid are idndicated by a SH3 Bait Icon icon over an area.

But if the bait and/or location is incorrect, the player will be forced into a battle with normal monsters, after which Natan will point out what went wrong.

The UMA Hunt questline is Natan's means to learn and improve his Special Arts, GUN-FU. Natan will always need to be in the active party before initiating conversation with Nvwoti. Since he is also required in order for bait to be placed, he will by extension always be present when battling UMAs. Also, as each individual UMA can only be fought once in the entire game, it is important to have Johnny in the party as well so that he may Snap them.

Sasquatch[]

Elusive Giant Man-Ape.

Name: Sasquatch
Habitat: North America

Details: Also Known as Bigfoot, sightings have been reported across all of northern America.

As its nickname suggests, has feet more than twice the size of an average man.

Generally quite harmless, but loves sweet things and will attack relentlessly to get them.

The first UMA hunt given is Sasquatch, in the Grand Canyon.

As the Grand Canyon dungeon is where Shania needs to make a spirit pact with Tatan'Ka at the same time the quest is given, it's a convenient time to do both at once.

The Sasquatch is the most straightforward of the UMAs to hunt, since it has only a single bait location; In the area between the second and third Totem Pole, in a corner of a dead end area where a chest can be found, just left of the save point.

As the Sasquatch is explicitly stated to like sweet things, the bait that would make the most sense to use is Honey.

Tihozhodhi[]

Mutant Amphibian

Name: Tihozhodhi
Habitat: Caribbean Sea

Details: A monster living in the sea, sightings are often reported in the wrecks of old wooden ships.

It can secrete a sticky fluid which it uses to hold its red, moss-like eggs in place close to is nest.

It is also extremely territorial, and detests the smell of citrus.

It will attack anything that smells of citrus that gets too close to its nest.

Trapping[]

Uma 02

Tihozhodhi is located on the shipwreck in the Caribbean Pirate Fort, and unlocked after receiving La Sirene.

The creature hides out across the main deck in the dark room. Before doing anything, equip your party with Pocket Watches and maybe add the Poison add-on to your Ring. Now, look at the rear corner of the room and Natan may comment about "Red Slime".

Place the Grapefruit here, and Tihozhodhi will be drawn out.

Chupakabra[]

Mystery Blood Sucker

Name: Unknown
Habitat: Southern America

Details: A mysterious creature that attacks chickens and othe small animals and sucks their blood.

Mexican farmers are reporting substantial losses.

A cautious creature, apparently walking upright on clawed feet.

It never attacks the same place twice, making hunting it very difficult.

Uma 03

This UMA is located on the third floor of Chichen Itza (which means he's unlocked after clearing Chichen Itza).

Equip Petrify and Slow to your ring, and some Light attribute Stellars to your Chart.

Set the bait of a Hare to the rear of the second group of support poles, where Natan comments, "footprints with nail hooks and nothing else".

Rogotomhere[]

Legendary Sea Monster

Name: Unknown
Habitat: Polynesian Islands.

Details: A mythical beast worshipped as a God on the islands of the South Seas.

Ancient customs involved the leaving of offerings to it to insure success when fishing.

The rite involves placing items of corresponding colors around a colored statue in a cave, and then finally offering gold on the altar to summon the monster and be blessed.

Trapping[]

Uma 04

Rogotomhere, is more of a challenge to find.

To lure it out, multiple pieces of bait must be used in order to catch it.

To begin, head to the glowing Blue Tikis at the center of the cave and lay down the Morpho's Scales. Next, go to the northwest corner of the cave to the three sets of Black Tikis. Head to the final set and to the left tiki and place the Maiden's Hair. Then, find the Red Tikis in the upper center of the room and place the Grapefruit there.

Equip your party with Bodhi Bracelets and equip the Ring with the Poison enhancement. Other effective Ring add-ons incluced Paralysis, Instant Death, and Sp-Defend Down. Finally, head to the North East and place a Gold Ore at the glowing altar.

Sky Fish[]

Unidentified Insect

Name: Sky Fish
Habitat: Across America.

Details: A translucent creature which dwells at the top of high towers and in other hard-to-reach places.

Capable of moving so fast that seeing it with the naked eye is very difficult.

Closely related to insects, it uses phreomones to confuse its prey before attacking.

However, the pheromone molecules are lighter than air, meaning that the trap must be laid directly below the target.

Trapping[]

After completeting Uyuni Salt Lake, return again, and reach the area in the tower with the star pattern on the floor.

Place the Morpho Scales in the middle of it. Then head to the top of the tower and place the Fly Paper.

This is the only UMA that should need no hesitation in fighting. After depleting a considerable portion of its HP, it will escape as soon as it reaches its turn. If that happens, the trap must be reset over again

Mudopkan[]

The Legendary UMA

Name: Unknown
Habitat: Guiana Highlands.
Details: (Taken from Research File)

A legendary UMA has been found in Guiana, South America.
Bait was used to lure it out, but was all eaten by other beasts.
These beasts will need to be dealt with first.
The UMA also appears to ignore any bair if it senses people nearby.

Once it senses safety it will slowly eat until full, and then sleep the meal off almost immediately.

Name: Unknown
Habitat: Guiana Highlands.
Details: (From President Vince's Memo)

When hunting live prey, the legendary UMA washes itself in the nearby water to first remove its scent.
When hunting it is even more sensitive to the presence of humans than normal, making it almost impossible to pin down.

My survey of the area has determined that there are 3 major watering holes in Guiana that the UMA makes use of.

Name: Unknown
Habitat: Guiana Highlands.
Details: (From Officer Hulk's Memo)

The legendary UMA loves sweet things.
It will drop a bee hive onto rocks, wait patiently for the bess to disperse, and then feed on the honey.

However, if the hive has been in direct sunlight and is dried out, the UMA is not interested.

Name: Unknown
Habitat: Guiana Highlands.
Details: (From Officer Magee's Memo)

The legendary UMA loves the sour fruit found at the top of tall trees.
Its distinctive five claw marks can often be seen on the trunks of trees.
It seems to dislike shiny or sticky things, as it will never approach them.

If these traits can be manipulated effectively, it might be possible to herd the UMA into a specific location.

Trapping[]

Uma 06

The most difficult to trap, it is easy to misplace the right bait among numerous trapping spots.

The Hare and Honey must be placed in a certain area. The Grapefruit must be put in a tree hollow.

The Maiden's Hair must be placed around the lakes. Fly Paper, Gold Ore, and Morpho Scales must be placed on certain patches of forest.

Look at the explanation to use the one needed for the trap. After Mudopkan eats, it will return to the nest, where it must be fought.
