Etymology

A Hand of Glory is the preserved remains of the hand of someone convicted of murder and hanged.

Commonly, it was the left hand that was preserved (sinistrality being seen as "unnatural"), though, on occasions the right hand was sometimes used.

It was believed that if the fats from the dead man were used in making a candle, and then was lit, it would cause all in its presence to fall asleep until the wick burnt out.
